Let’s Go Hunting

Don’t get much better than fall. Bring on the camo, ammo, ducks, and bucks

Parents know that watching their children grow is bittersweet, which brings to mind this quote, “Parenting is realizing the sadness of watching your kids grow up is outweighed by the joy of seeing them grow up.” When children grow into adults, there are opportunities to create lasting memories through trips and experiences that wouldn’t have been possible when they were younger.

Recently two of our clients, Andy Nickerson and Scott Vandeventer, embarked on a waterfowl hunting trip. Andy brought his son, Kyle, while Scott brought his son-in-law, Adam. Before going on “the shoot”, Andy and Kyle made a father-son trip of it, seeing the sights in Tennessee.

Kyle is a senior at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. In November, Andy picked up Kyle and they made their way to Memphis. They did a little sightseeing there first. Next, they visited Graceland and made their way to Beale Street where they enjoyed some great meals and music. Before leaving Memphis, they stopped at the Bass Pro Shop Pyramid to pick up a few things before they began hunting.

They made it to the bunk house and the next day they were out the door by 4:30am, arriving at the blinds (the structures that conceal hunters from the game) before first light. They hunted until around noon each day. The weather was clear, with temperatures dropping into the mid 20s at night. The flooded rice and bean fields would freeze over, and the guides had to break up the ice when they got to the blinds in the morning.

Scott joked that it was more of a "shoot" than a "hunt". Anything that moved, they shot at it, however, waiting for the opportunity to shoot could get a little boring as they sat there, wading in the cold water. Each night they had a “game + game night”, playing games together and enjoying the fowl they had caught a la Duck Bolognese.

A wonderful time was had by all, and we enjoyed hearing from both clients and how they pursue what matters most, family and friends. Thanks for sharing about this memorable trip!
